Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you do what you do? It’s such a simple question, yet when explored deeply, it can reveal so much about who we are and what truly drives us. Recently, during a surf-inspired film shoot on the beach, I was asked this very question: “Why do you surf?” At first, the answer seemed obvious—because I love it. But as I dug deeper, peeling back the layers of “why,” I uncovered so much more.
The experience reminded me of the endless curiosity of children, who constantly ask, “Why?” They don’t settle for surface-level answers; they keep digging until they reach the essence of the matter. This practice of asking “why” isn’t just for kids—it’s a powerful tool for self-discovery and connection. In today’s blog, I’ll share how exploring your “why” can strengthen your connection to yourself, give clarity to your actions, and help you stay motivated—even through challenges.
The Wisdom of the Waves: Finding Your “Why”
Surfing often becomes a mirror for life, offering moments of introspection and connection. During the shoot, as I stood on the beach with my board or paddled out into the waves, I reflected on why I love surfing. At first, the answer was simple: because it’s fun. But why is it fun? Because it makes me feel alive. Why does it make me feel alive? Because I feel present. Why is presence important? Because when I’m fully in the moment, I feel deeply connected to my true essence.
This process of continually asking “why” helped me uncover the deeper layers of meaning behind my love for surfing. It’s not just about catching waves; it’s about the feelings of freedom, joy, and connection it gives me. Surfing reminds me of who I am at my core—a person who thrives on the balance of challenge and flow, movement and stillness, fun and reflection.
Why Knowing Your “Why” Matters
Exploring your “why” isn’t just an interesting exercise; it’s essential for navigating life’s ups and downs. Life, like surfing, isn’t always easy. Sometimes the waves are challenging, the conditions tough, and the progress slow. In those moments, knowing your “why” can be the anchor that keeps you going.
When you have a clear sense of purpose, even tasks that don’t feel enjoyable in the moment become more meaningful. You’re no longer just going through the motions or doing things because “you’ve always done them.” Instead, your actions align with your values, vision, and the essence of who you are.
Without a strong “why,” motivation tends to waver. It’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture and abandon things when they become difficult. But when your “why” is deeply rooted, it becomes a source of strength and inspiration, guiding you forward even in the toughest moments.
How to Uncover Your “Why”
The process of finding your “why” is simple but profound. Start by asking yourself why you do a certain activity, job, or routine. When you arrive at an answer, ask “why” again. Keep peeling back the layers until you reach the core—the essence that resonates deeply with your heart.
For example, if you love running, your “why” might start with “because it’s healthy.” But when you dig deeper, you might discover it’s also because running makes you feel free, clears your mind, or connects you to nature. Each layer brings you closer to the essence of what truly matters to you.
Reflection: Connecting to Your Essence
Your “why” is ultimately about connection—connection to your true self, your essence. It’s that deep sense of knowing who you are and what brings you joy, peace, and purpose. For me, surfing brings out my essence. It lights a fire within me while grounding me in the present moment. It energizes me when I feel low and calms me when I feel overwhelmed.
What about you? What connects you to your essence? Is it a walk in the woods, a quiet moment with a book, or time spent creating something meaningful? And most importantly, are you giving this activity enough space in your life?
Time to take out your journal – or a piece of paper – and a pen, take a moment for yourself and contemplate on these questions:
Questions for Reflection
1. What is one activity you do regularly? Why do you do it?
2. When was the last time you felt deeply connected to yourself? What were you doing?
3. Are there any routines in your life that no longer align with your values or vision?
4. If you haven’t found your “why” yet, what’s one thing you can explore to uncover it?
5. How can you make more room for activities that connect you to your essence?
Discovering your “why” isn’t just about understanding what drives you—it’s about creating a life that reflects your deepest values and desires. Whether it’s surfing, walking barefoot on the grass, or simply pausing to breathe, finding your “why” connects you to the most authentic version of yourself
